Sources and assumptions. kg/m = cross-section area (mm²) × density (g/cm³) / 1000. Density: steel 7.85; stainless 201/304 7.93; stainless 316 8.00 g/cm³ ⚠. Angles, channels, I/H beams and tubes are computed geometrically without root radii, so results may differ from mill tables by about ±3–5 % ⚠; zinc coating on galvanized pipe is not included. ⚠ = code table value to be checked against the original standard. Preliminary results for material selection and budgeting; not a substitute for an approved fire protection design.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate steel pipe weight?
kg/m = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 with outside diameter OD and wall t in mm. Example Ø114 × 3 mm: (114 − 3) × 3 × 0.02466 ≈ 8.21 kg/m, a 6 m length ≈ 49.3 kg.
How much does a 10 mm plate 1500 × 6000 weigh?
10 × 1500 × 6000 mm × 7.85 / 1,000,000 = 706.5 kg per sheet.
How much heavier is stainless than carbon steel?
Stainless 304 is about 7.93 g/cm³, about 1 % heavier than carbon steel (7.85); 316 is about 8.00 g/cm³, about 2 % heavier.
